Principal Investigator

Professor Prakriti Tayalia

Her research interest includes the use of material that has the ability to direct cell response in a variety of ways, for example, modulate the immune response, direct lineage-specific differentiation, guide cell migration, or direct programmed cell death. However, the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying their ability to manipulate the cells is not completely understood. Recent progress in this interdisciplinary field of materials science and biology has allowed us to design and fabricate material platforms that will improve our understanding of these processes. We would like to utilize engineering tools, state-of-the-art characterization techniques, and biological assays to develop physiologically relevant material systems that would support multicellular culture in a more controlled fashion. Use a combination of microfabricated and naturally occurring 3D matrices to delineate the role of biochemical cues (density, type, gradient) from physical cues (stiffness, degradation, architecture) affecting cell adhesion and migration in 3D as a model for understanding cell motility in the body.
